What to expect at a blacksmithing experience day

Never been near a forge before? Most people who come to me haven't. Here is what actually happens on the day, what to wear and what to bring, from a working blacksmith who has taught hundreds of beginners in Elland.

Before you arrive

My forge is at Bridge End Works, 7a Unit 3, Saddleworth Road, Elland HX5 0RY, a short drive from Halifax, Huddersfield and Leeds. There is parking just over the road from the workshop.

Experience days are for anyone aged 11 and over, and complete beginners are welcome. You do not need any experience, strength or special kit, only a willingness to get a little warm and a bit dirty.

What to wear

Wear clothes made of natural fibres, such as cotton or wool, and sensible, sturdy footwear. Natural fibres are safer around the fire, because synthetic fabrics can melt if a spark lands on them. Wear something you do not mind getting a bit grubby.

You do not need to bring any safety gear. I provide all the tools, protective equipment and instruction.

What happens on the day

You are taught one to one by me, Leon, unless you have booked as a group. We start with how to work safely around the fire, then you heat the steel, move it to the anvil and draw it into shape with hammer and tongs, the way ironwork has been made for centuries.

Plenty of folk arrive a bit wary of the fire and the tools. By the end they are in charge of both, at their own pace. There is always tea and coffee on hand, and you take home what you make.

Timings are approximate. It is always more important that you leave with a piece you are happy with, even if it takes a little longer than booked.
