Why iron for the sixth anniversary?
The list of anniversary materials most of us know was written down in the 1920s by an American jeweller, but it leaned on far older customs. Paper came first because it is fragile, and the materials harden year by year: cotton, leather, fruit and flowers, wood, and then iron at six years. The idea is simple. By the sixth year a marriage has been tested, and iron is the material that stands for strength and staying power.
Iron has carried that meaning for as long as people have worked it. Horseshoes went up over doors for luck, iron was buried at thresholds to keep ill fortune out, and the smith was the one trusted with the hinges, latches and hearth tools that held a home together. Good ironwork outlasted the people who made it, which is exactly what you want from a gift that marks a marriage.
What makes a good iron anniversary gift
Plenty of shops will sell you something iron-coloured. A proper iron gift is made of the stuff, by hand, and it should earn a place in the house rather than a drawer. I would look for three things: a piece that gets used or seen every day, something made by a person rather than a factory, and a way to make it personal.
That last part is where forged iron shines. Letters and numbers can be stamped straight into the hot metal, names can be carved in runes, and finer wording can be etched. Your wedding date on the base of a candlestick, your initials on a door knocker, a line from your vows along a stand: the gift becomes a record of the two of you.

Iron anniversary pieces from my forge
Four pieces I forge for the sixth anniversary, posted anywhere in the world from Elland.

Make it theirs
Every one of these can be made yours: letter and number stamping (+£10), runic carving (+£30) or chemical etching (+£50). Order on Etsy, then message me with the date, initials or runes you would like.
If you would rather have something nobody else owns, ask me about a commission. A pair of fire tools, a house sign, a hook rail for the hallway, a plant stand for the garden: I will talk it through with you, send a drawing and a clear price, and make it once, for you.
Gifts for him, for her, and for the house
For him: the twist bottle opener on its stand is the one that gets picked up and shown to friends. A troll cross on a leather cord suits anyone with a taste for the Norse. For her: the candlestick, or a copper and crystal wand if she has a witchy streak. For the house you share: the door knocker, a pair of coat hooks, or a shelf bracket forged as a kraken tentacle or a nautilus shell.
Not sure? Give an experience instead. A couples blacksmithing day at the forge lets you both make something in iron together, and you leave with the pieces and the story.
